WordPress.com vs WordPress.org
Quick Definition
WordPress.org is the free, self-hosted software you install on your own hosting. WordPress.com is a managed platform run by Automattic where hosting is included. Same core software, very different levels of control.

What Is the Difference?
This is the single most confusing thing about WordPress for beginners: there are two "WordPresses," and they are very different.
- WordPress.org (self-hosted) — The free, open-source software you download from wordpress.org and install on your own web hosting. You own everything: the code, the content, the data, the design. You can install any plugin, any theme, and customize anything. This is what most people mean when they say "WordPress" — and it is what powers 43% of all websites.
- WordPress.com (hosted platform) — A managed hosting service run by Automattic (the company co-founded by WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg). You sign up for an account, pick a plan, and they handle hosting, security, and updates. Simpler to start, but significantly more limited in what you can customize — especially on the free and lower-tier plans.
The core software is the same. The difference is who hosts it and how much control you have.
Key differences at a glance:
- Cost — WordPress.org: free software + hosting ($3–30/month). WordPress.com: free plan available, paid plans $4–45/month for more features.
- Plugins — WordPress.org: install any of 59,000+ free plugins. WordPress.com: only Business plan ($33/month) and above allow plugin installation.
- Themes — WordPress.org: use any theme from anywhere. WordPress.com: limited theme selection on lower plans.
- Monetization — WordPress.org: full control over ads and affiliate links. WordPress.com: restricted on free/lower plans.
- SEO control — WordPress.org: full access to SEO plugins, schema markup, and technical SEO. WordPress.com: limited SEO tools on lower plans.
- E-commerce — WordPress.org: full WooCommerce support. WordPress.com: only on Commerce plan ($45/month).

At ZeroToWP, everything we teach is about WordPress.org (self-hosted). When we say "WordPress," we mean the self-hosted version. For a detailed comparison, see our WordPress.com vs WordPress.org guide.
Why It Matters
Starting on the wrong version of WordPress can waste months of work. If you build a site on WordPress.com's free plan and later realize you need plugins, WooCommerce, or full SEO control, you will either need to upgrade to an expensive plan or migrate everything to self-hosted WordPress.org. Understanding this distinction before you start saves time, money, and frustration.
