What Is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the human-readable address of your website. Instead of typing a string of numbers like 192.168.1.1 (an IP address) into your browser, you type something memorable like zerotowp.com. The domain name system (DNS) then translates that name into the actual server IP address where your website files are stored.

Think of it like a phone contact. You do not memorize phone numbers — you save a name and tap it to call. A domain name works the same way: it is a friendly label that points to your website's location on the internet.

A domain name has two main parts: the name (like "zerotowp") and the extension or TLD — top-level domain (like ".com"). Popular extensions include .com, .org, .net, .io, and country-specific ones like .nl or .co.uk. For most WordPress sites, .com is the best choice because it is the most recognized and trusted by visitors.

How Domain Names Work

Here is what happens when someone visits your website:

1. They type yourdomain.com into their browser.
2. The browser asks a DNS server: "What IP address does this domain point to?"
3. The DNS server responds with the IP address of your web hosting server.
4. The browser connects to that server and loads your WordPress site.

This entire process happens in milliseconds. You register your domain name through a domain registrar — a company accredited to sell domain names. Popular registrars include Namecheap, Cloudflare Registrar, Google Domains, and GoDaddy. Most domains cost between $8 and $15 per year for a .com.

Important: buying a domain name does not include web hosting. You need both a domain (the address) and hosting (the space where your site lives). Many hosting providers like Hostinger and Bluehost include a free domain for the first year with their hosting plans.

Choosing a Good Domain Name

When picking a domain for your WordPress site, keep these tips in mind:

• Keep it short and memorable — Shorter names are easier to type and remember.
• Avoid hyphens and numbers — They are confusing when spoken aloud.
• Use .com when possible — It is the default people assume.
• Make it brandable — A unique name is easier to build a brand around than a generic keyword domain.
