What Is the WordPress Foundation?

The WordPress Foundation is a nonprofit organization (US 501(c)(3)) founded by Matt Mullenweg to protect WordPress and ensure it remains free, open-source software forever. Its mission: "Democratize publishing through Open Source, GPL software."

The Foundation exists to solve a simple but critical problem: people and companies come and go, but the WordPress source code needs to survive beyond any individual contributor, company, or era. The Foundation ensures that no one — not even Automattic — can make WordPress proprietary.

The Foundation's three core responsibilities:

  • Trademark ownership — The Foundation owns the WordPress name, logo, and related trademarks. Automattic transferred the WordPress trademark to the Foundation in 2010, specifically to keep it independent. Other businesses can reference WordPress but cannot use the name as part of their own product, domain, or company name without permission.
  • Free access in perpetuity — The Foundation guarantees that the WordPress source code will always be available under the GPL license. Even if every current contributor disappeared tomorrow, the code would remain free and forkable.
  • Educational programs — The Foundation funds "Intro to Open Source" workshops in underrepresented regions and charity hackathons where developers build free websites for nonprofits.

The key distinction in the WordPress ecosystem:

  • WordPress.org = The open-source project and community
  • WordPress Foundation = The nonprofit that owns the trademark and protects the project
  • Automattic = The company that builds commercial products (WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack) on top of WordPress

All three are connected but legally separate. The Foundation is the guardian. Automattic is the largest commercial contributor. WordPress.org is the project itself.

The WordPress Foundation in Practice

For most WordPress users, the Foundation operates invisibly in the background. You benefit from its work every day without thinking about it:

  • The WordPress name and logo are protected from misuse by the Foundation's trademark policy
  • The guarantee that WordPress will always be GPL-licensed gives you confidence to build your business on it
  • The Foundation's educational programs bring new contributors into the community, which means more people building plugins, themes, and improvements

The Foundation is funded by donations and does not sell products or services. It is deliberately lean — its purpose is protection and stewardship, not commercial activity.

Why It Matters

The WordPress Foundation is why you can trust WordPress as a platform for your business. It legally prevents any company from taking WordPress proprietary, ensures the code stays free under the GPL, and protects the brand from confusion and misuse. When you choose WordPress over a closed platform like Wix or Squarespace, the Foundation is the legal structure that guarantees your freedom will not be taken away.
